It’s a rare sight to see soft components in Chinese furniture, mostly structured around wooden material, even the Chinese phrase for sofa is the direct transliteration of the English word, but has become an essential part of the furniture world through a long evolution. How the Oriental furniture elements may be integrated to the Western fundamentals, is what this project is aiming to find out.

The entire series is based on wooden structure, and designed around “button” as the inspiring clothing element, as if putting clothes on to a Chinese wooden body, combining and contrasting the soft and hard factors of furniture. Changeable sofa covers and matching buttons enables styling flexibility, which in turn allows the product to meet a greater market.

This is an attempt to begin a bold and new lifestyle, amidst the vast yet conservative Chinese furniture market.

COZ sounds like the “button” in Chinese, and also has a hint of “cozy” for their close pronunciation.

This project is part of a TPDG design initiative, in collaboration with 志達集團of China. The initiative focuses on utilising fabrics as the main material and clothing elements as the main inspiration, to come up with home decor designs that would be as comfortable as wearing your own clothes.
